Our Take on Purpose

We as humans ask a myriad of why’s. It is in our nature to search and give meaning and reason to things, objects, occurrences, people, places and experiences.

We ache for things to matter.
To be a part of something bigger.
To make a difference. Preferably for the better.

Most of all, we ache for our lives to matter. It’s one of our psychological core needs to find purpose for our actions, work and lives as a whole.

The Purpose (τέλος – final end, goal)
we are looking for is, in short the answer to a question:
Why and for what cause does a person like me exist?
or
Why and for what cause do we as an organization or business exist?

At Nordman on purpose we see purpose as the most fundamental, most intriguing and most relevant question for all individuals, organizations and businesses.

“We do not have knowledge of a thing until we have grasped it’s why, that is to say, it’s cause.” said Aristoteles, fascinated with the telos of things, organisms and humans. And we need to have a grasp of this why in order to build our individual lives, organizations or businesses in a way that we can find fulfillment, sustainable wellbeing, thriving and success.

While asking the why of our existence is a psychological tendency,  purpose is also a deeply existential question. Our approach on purpose and life is strongly multidisciplinary. We combine theory, research and literature from psychology, sociology, education, philosophy and theology to make sense of the concepts of purpose and meaning and their applications and ramifications on different aspects of life.

Here are our 7 key takes on purpose which serve as a theoretical baseline for our work:

1

One’s life purpose is the answer to the question why and for what cause does a person like me exist. The purpose of a business, organization or a team is the answer to the same question, only extended to the entity in question.

Asking the question is based on our common human, psychological need to find meaning in things and find a life that is fulfilling in terms of self actualization and making a difference beyond one self. (1)

2

Although purpose is an existential and in part a spiritual question, the answer to one’s life purpose is not (necessarily) religious or connected to a specific belief system.

3

Purpose and meaning are not interchangeable concepts.
Meaning is the significance or importance of something, someone, object, occurrence, action or task. We can find meaning in variety of little things, such as walking in nature or listening to a specific song.

Purpose is the reason and cause for which something exists, making purpose a more profound concept. Purpose also gives us meaning or drives the meaning we give to specific things. For example, specific, individual everyday work tasks are given meaning when we know our purpose and see how the task is related to it.

4

Purpose is always found by first looking at yourself.
You can identify why you are when you see who you are. Nobody’s purpose is something they are not interested or passionate about. Purpose and self-actualization go hand in hand.  One’s life purpose can be found in the combination of meanings one gives to everything they are and have been through. Therefore, finding purpose is always a self reflective journey for individuals as well as organizations.

5

Purpose is always something beyond yourself.
Purpose is the answer to the big why of life  that has three components: 1) It has to do with something that is significant, interesting or enjoyable to a person. 2) It is a long term goal or an end that one is aiming for, a change or an affect one wants to make. 3) It benefits others and the world around us. Without the element of service, there is no sense of purpose. (2)

6

Purpose is always a verb.
We, individuals and organizations, do something all the time. And all that we do have an effect on something or someone. A verb that describes action that is natural, enjoyable and important to us that also benefits others gives us purpose. (3)

7

Purpose is the why behind what you do (mission) and what you want to achieve (vision). A clear sense of purpose serves as a foundation or a compass in navigating life, career, project, business. It is also a bed rock for sustainable wellbeing with strong connections to resilience, hopefulness, feelings of happiness, physical health and business success. (4)
